We all know interviews can feel daunting, we’ve all been there at one point or another. The thought of sitting across from a hiring manager while they fire questions at you can feel more like an interrogation than an opportunity. But here’s the truth, interviews should be a two-way conversation. It’s not a test.
Your interviewer isn’t there to trip you up or put you on the spot. They genuinely want to get to know you, your skills, personality, and whether you’d be a great fit for the team. Your CV has already told them you’re qualified and have the experience they need, now they just need to know more about you! So, how do you shift your mindset to turn your interview into a conversation that works in your favour? Let’s break it down a little and give you a few interview tips.
Prepare, but Don’t Over-Rehearse
You want to walk in confident, not robotic. Preparing answers for common interview questions is great, but don’t just memorise a script, you’ll sound unnatural. Instead of rehearsing word-for-word, focus on some key talking points so you can answer fluidly while keeping the conversation natural.
For example: Instead of saying, “I’m a highly organised, detail-oriented professional with strong leadership skills” you could say “I love taking the lead on projects and making sure everything runs smoothly. In my last job, I….(insert an example here)”.
Treat It Like a Two-Way Conversation
An interview isn’t just about the employer assessing you, you’re assessing them too! The best interviews flow like a normal conversation, where both sides are engaged and asking questions. One of our favourite interview tips to share: Instead of waiting until the end to ask questions, interject naturally throughout the conversation. This keeps the conversation balanced and makes you look confident and proactive.
Ditch The One-Word Answers
If they ask, “Tell me about a time you solved a problem,” don’t just say, “Yeah, I solved a problem once in my last job.”
Make sure you cover:
– What the problem was
– What was your role fixing that problem
– What steps you took to ensure it got sorted
– How did it turn out
A well structured answer keeps the conversation engaging. It also highlights necessary skills the potential employer is looking for. By avoiding using short, sharp, one-word answers, you allow the interviewer to be relaxed too. Rather than being put on the spot with short answers they don’t necessarily know how to move on from.
Show Your Personality (They’re Hiring A Person, Not A Robot!)
Employers aren’t just hiring a skillset, they’re hiring a person. Someone who will fit in with the existing team. A person who will contribute to the company culture. Someone who brings a positive attitude and outlook to work.
Let your personality shine through in the way you engage with the interviewer.
– Smile
– Use natural body language
– Show enthusiasm when talking about your work
Your energy and confidence will leave a lasting impression.
Flip The Script!
Nothing makes an interview feel more like a conversation than asking great questions. Not just generic ones like, “What’s the company culture like?”, dive deeper. What do you REALLY want to know about the company, the role, the employees, etc.
Great questions show that you’re genuinely interested in the company. And will ultimately help you determine if it’s the right place for you.
Mind Your Pace & Tone
Some candidates rush through their answers, while others give one-word replies, in all honesty, neither is ideal. Slow down, breathe, and engage naturally.
– Fast talker? Pause for a second or two before answering.
– Really nervous? Take a sip of water before responding to collect yourself.
– If you tend to be brief with your answers, expand on them by adding details or particular examples.
Confidence is Key!
A successful interview isn’t about memorising the perfect answers. Nor every little detail on your CV that the interviewer has already seen. It’s about being prepared, engaged, and showing the employer who you really are. If you can shift your mindset from “I need to impress them”, to “Let’s see if this is right for both of us”, you’ll naturally feel more confident, relaxed, and ready to succeed.
